I moved from London to Shanghai in late 2003. It was a good time to arrive, as Shanghai had just become big news in the global media.
I edited Shanghai Business Review for two years, then co-founded Scribes of the Orient, a Shanghai-based media and communications agency and then Silk Guides. The best part about my job is traveling around this vast nation to work for Business Traveler, ZAGAT Survey, CNN Traveller, Time Out, Concierge.com, Travel+Leisure and Conde Nast Traveller
What's your favourite thing to do on a Sunday?
Get away from the crowds. Shanghai is a frenetic city, and strolling along the tree-lined streets of the
French Concession frees my mind from the (sometimes) frenzy of downtown, and sitting by the window in
Anna Maya a Japanese vegetarian café on Taojiang Lu is so relaxing, I can temporarily forget that I live in a city of 20 million people.
How would you spend a long weekend?
Shanghai weekends are all about eating out, and the city has a great mixture of Chinese and international restaurants. After a weekend of ritual refueling, late afternoon on Sunday is time to give the body some therapy a full-body massage at
Apsara beckons then a casual glass of wine at
Enoteca or
Sasha's garden in summer..
What's your idea of a good night out?
Kick-off happy hour frozen margaritas at
Cantina Agave. Then dinner at a small French Concession restaurant; maybe some
Yunnanese at
Lost heaven, followed by some nightcaps with friends at
Kiitos or
Constellation II or
The Apartment.
