Places to stay on the North Coast of NSW have one thing in common: when the mercury rises, so do the prices.
From basic caravan parks to ritzy resorts, accommodation at the coast is varied and plentiful. Get the unbiased dirt from our unbiased expert.
Byron at Byron, Byron Bay
With its enviable location beneath a canopy of lush rainforest, the recently refurbished Byron is the kind of place you won't want to leave. Raised wooden walkways connect guest rooms and facilities leading you through a semitropical wonderland right to Tallow Beach. There's also an excellent day spa, daily yoga classes, forest walks and early morning expeditions to the local farmers market with Head Chef Gavin Hughes as well as a superb a la carte restaurant.
Byron Motor Lodge Motel, Byron Bay
Yes, it has that standard chain feel, but this motel is well-priced and conveniently located smack-dab in the middle of Byron. The queen-bed rooms are spacious and clean and there's also a guest pool, laundry and ample off-street parking.
Clarkes Beach Holiday Park, Byron Bay
For anyone looking for the ultimate affordable seaside holiday, this is it. Located on a prime piece of beachfront real estate, you'll be lulled asleep each night by the sound of crashing waves. Accommodation ranges from pitching a tent to four-star, self-contained cabins.

Eternity Springs Art Farm, The Channon
On the outskirts of The Channon, this 1920s farmhouse with its colourful accommodation has a fabulously reclusive yet creative vibe. Art tuition is available and guests are encouraged to learn more about the local ecology by volunteering with reforestation projects.

Gaia Retreat & Spa, Bangalow
Part-owned by Olivia Newton-John, Gaia is a pleasure palace for anyone in need of a little self-indulgence. Just minutes from Byron Bay this pricey, 20-room retreat offers a variety of activities to rejuvenate your spirit from gentle strolls to vigorous exercise programs.

Atlantic Guesthouses, Byron Bay
Previously known as Middle Reef Backpackers, this wonderfully laidback guesthouse offers a range of accommodation to suit every pocket from shared rooms with bunk beds to premium ensuite doubles — you can even rest your head in a retro refitted American Airstream caravan. Located just metres from Main Beach, with high ceilings, chalk-white wall and a lush tropical garden it exudes Byron Bay chic.

Old Convent Guesthouse, Uki
Part of the old St Joseph's convent in the historic town of Uki, this lovely collection of quiet apartments — all named after former nuns — offers a perfectly peaceful place to rest your head. The apartments come complete with a fully-equipped kitchen, a large deck with barbecue and a spacious lounge with ceiling fans and fire for cool winter nights.

Rae's on Watego's, Byron Bay
An ultra luxe boutique hotel that is favoured by the cool crowd; Nicole Kidman, Keith Richards and Hugh Jackman have all stayed here. Sitting atop one of the world's most gorgeous beaches, the million-dollar views at this Spanish-style villa come with a price tag to match.

Riverside Backpackers Hostel, Murwillumbah
Part of the YHA chain, this character-filled 90-year-old sea captain's house, situated on the banks of the Tweed River, has spectacular views over the valley and up to magnificent Mount Warning. Activities include bushwalking, cycling and canoeing.

Clarence River B&B, Grafton
Think luxury accommodation needs to be pricey and impersonal? Think again. Just 18km/20mins northwest of Grafton overlooking its namesake river, this fantastic B&B is not only luxurious and homely but well-priced to boot. Featuring five double rooms with enormous spa baths and private balconies as well as a spacious 14-bed bunkhouse, it's an ideal retreat for water sports lovers (kayaking, waterskiing and wakeboarding are all on offer) or anyone simply wanting to get away from it all.
