University House, Canberra
Whether you're looking to splash out or keep to a budget, our Insider has the best Canberra hotel info out there.
University House
Situated in a peaceful corner of the ANU campus, University House is lauded for its 1950s architecture and furniture. Nice rooms at an excellent price. Close to the city and a bus that will take you through to Parkes and Manuka.
Canberra City YHA
Canberra City YHA is pretty standard budget hostel accommodation, with bunk beds, shared bathrooms and a couple of private rooms. There are cooking facilities, Internet, a pool and a rooftop. YHA rent out bikes (probably the best way to get around Canberra). The hostel is located in the city centre, above Transit Bar. Great if you want to party, maybe not so good if you want a peaceful night's sleep.
Hyatt Hotel
The Hyatt Hotel isn't the highest-rated of Canberra's hotels but does offer luxury with a certain old-world charm. The property sprawls out to include a series of low-sitting salmon buildings and holds a variety of rooms, from the Park King to the Presidential Suite. The Hyatt is next to the quaint Albert Hall, and closer than any others to the region's main cultural institutions. If you can't afford to stay here, pop in for ritual afternoon tea at The Tea Lounge.
Quality Hotel Woden
If you need to stay south-side try the Quality Hotel Woden. Clean, spacious rooms, with a view looking out over Woden.
Uni stays
If you're looking for somewhere cheap to stay in the summer months, try the ANU university colleges. When the kids go home for Christmas the colleges rent out individual rooms. Each room contains a bed, desk, wardrobe and sink with shared facilities. The catered colleges include up to three meals a day in the price. It's no-frills accommodation, with little personal attention by staff, but super affordable and located in the beautiful ANU campus, close to the city.
Brassey Hotel
Brassey Hotel is in between the Parliamentary Triangle and Manuka; I wouldn't recommend staying here without access to a car. The rooms are well appointed but quite small. The hotel was opened in 1927 and has historically served as accommodation for those on visiting on parliamentary business; it still has that feel.
Rydges Lakeside Canberra Hotel
While I've heard some unflattering reviews of Rydges Lakeside Canberra Hotel in the past, they've recently updated the rooms and boast new "dream beds". The hotel is a bit business-y but the view from the Skyline restaurant is hard to beat.
Rydges Eagle Hawk Canberra Resort
Just on the outskirts of Canberra, with a 10-15-minute drive into town, Rydges Eagle Hawk Canberra Resort is a bit more laid-back than its lakeside cousin. The hotel is situated on 12 hectares of landscaping that will help you understand the nickname "bush capital". Suited to conferences and functions, the function rooms have a nice view out onto the gardens.
Olims Hotel Canberra
Olims Hotel was opened in 1927 to coincide with the opening of the original Parliament House and is listed by the National Trust. The large homestead houses spacious, comfortable rooms surrounded by nice gardens.
Diamant Boutique Hotel
Diamant Boutique Hotel/ shares the proximity to the city and cultural institutions that some other hotels boast as a selling point, but takes off on its own when it comes to style and class. The five-star hotel has groovy rooms and interiors, well stocked bookcases and bars and I've heard excellent things about the Flint restaurant. Keep an eye on the growing art collection that adorns the complex.

The ARIA Hotel in Dickson is a secret gem in Canberra. I had never heard of it before my partner and I stayed there a few weekends ago. The hotel presents beautifully, you barely remember that busy Northbourne Ave is less then 100 metres away. The apartments are beautifully furnished and the rates are very reasonable. Highly recommended.
